The Detroit Historical Society and the Wayne County Executive Office will host the Wayne County History Project Opening Celebration on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Guardian Building in downtown Detroit. This free, family-friendly event will include refreshments, crafts, and interactive activities for children, alongside the debut of a compelling new exhibition that honors the stories and communities that helped shape Wayne County.

The inaugural exhibition highlights Redford, Westland, Livonia, Garden City, Inkster, and Wayne—featuring narratives of innovation in Garden City, resistance in Inkster, and transformation across Livonia and Redford. Attendees will discover how these communities blossomed through agriculture, industrial growth, migration, and civil rights activism. From abolitionist roots and sundown towns to pioneering Black-owned media outlets and landmark businesses, each story reflects the resilience and diversity of Wayne County’s history.

The Wayne County History Project will continue through six rotating exhibitions and a digital archive, preserving and sharing the county’s multifaceted heritage.
