The streets of downtown Ferndale will once again come alive with vibrant, edgy creativity as the 21st Annual Funky Ferndale Art Fair returns Friday through Sunday, September 19–21. Known as one of the “Top 200 Art Fairs in the Country” by Sunshine Artist Magazine, this juried show brings more than 140 bold and innovative artists from across the nation—a showcase where art doesn’t just blend in, it stands out.
“This show is about artists who push boundaries and challenge convention,” said Mark Loeb, event organizer. “We want work that makes people stop, think, and connect. Half our visitors are seasoned art buyers looking for something fresh. The other half discover here, maybe for the first time, that they actually love art.”

This year’s Make Art Zone, located at the corner of Allen and Troy, puts the spotlight on wearable art and interactive creativity. Visitors can meet Jeff Semmerling, a renowned puppet master, mask maker, and all-around creative, who has designed the nine-foot-tall FerndAlien puppet. The FerndAlien will roam the fair throughout the weekend, while Jeff hosts a special hands-on activity at Allen and Troy where kids are invited to make their own bird puppet with a moveable beak—FREE of charge. The streets will be filled with kids and their masks! Jeff will also showcase and sell his stunning collection of handcrafted leather masks.

The FerndAlien itself was originally created by Gordie Morton, who has graciously given permission for this year’s whimsical revival. Visitors can also find exclusive FerndAlien merchandise at the Information Tent at Troy and Allen.

The Detroit Institute of Arts returns once again with another interactive project—always a crowd favorite. And don’t miss artist Dale Teachout, known for his large-scale sculptures crafted from discarded materials, who will unveil a brand-new art experience just for this year’s fair.
Adding to the excitement, the Authors Tent will feature a dozen local writers throughout the weekend, offering book signings and conversations with authors whose works span children’s literature, young adult fiction, and beyond. The fair will also showcase live music on the Nine Mile & Allen stage all weekend long.

The Funky Ferndale Art Fair continues to be a cultural cornerstone for Metro Detroit, offering a one-of-a-kind blend of high-quality art, immersive community projects, and an unmistakably funky flair. Whether you’re an avid collector or just looking for an unforgettable weekend experience, this year’s fair promises to be bigger, bolder, and funkier than ever.
