Dr. Alicia Shelby, MD is a Detroit-born and raised Emergency Medicine physician, healthcare executive, and nationally emerging voice in health equity and physician leadership.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Wayne State University and went on to receive her medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, grounding her career in a deep understanding of both the science of medicine and the human experience behind it.
She serves as Medical Director and Associate Section Chief of the Emergency Department of St Anne Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio where she oversees clinical operations, quality strategy, and physician performance. As the first Black female Director of the Emergency Department at her institution, Dr. Shelby has broken historic barriers while leading high-acuity teams in one of medicine’s most demanding environments. Her leadership focuses on operational excellence, patient flow innovation, and advancing equitable emergency care delivery.
Beyond the hospital, Dr. Shelby is the Executive Director and founder of Shelby Health Equity Advocates, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities. Through strategic partnerships, education initiatives, and advocacy, she works to close gaps in access and improve outcomes in urban populations—particularly in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Shelby also brings an entrepreneurial lens to medicine. Through a strategic partnership with the Hayes Institute of Esthetics and Entrepreneurship in Detroit, Michigan, she helps provide advanced education and business training to nurses and nurse practitioners seeking to expand their expertise in medical aesthetics. This collaboration reflects her commitment to workforce development, clinical excellence, and empowering healthcare professionals with sustainable career pathways.
