Jealous or Justified is our feature where we present real-life relationship dilemmas and ask you, our readers, to decide: is the writer acting out of jealousy, or are they justified in getting involved?

The Secret That Could Destroy Three Lives

Dear Beautiful Machine,

I’ve been carrying a secret for almost six months, and it’s eating me alive.

My best friend and I have known each other since high school. We’ve been through everything together weddings, family milestones, the works. I consider him my brother.

About a year ago, he started dating an incredible woman. She fit seamlessly into our group, and everyone thought she was “the one.” A few months later, they got engaged.

That’s when everything changed.

One night, another close friend called me in a panic. He had just picked up my best friend’s fiancée from a clinic after she had an abortion. She was distraught and begged him not to tell anyone especially her fiancé. She admitted the baby wasn’t his. She had seen an ex one last time shortly before the engagement, trying to close that chapter, and later discovered she was pregnant. She ended the pregnancy because she was terrified the truth would destroy the engagement.

The friend who helped her didn’t want to be involved, so he told me because he needed someone to talk to. Now the burden is mine.

Every time I see my best friend planning his wedding, talking about buying a house, or saying how lucky he is, I feel sick. He has no idea. But I also question whether this is my place. I wasn’t there. She didn’t tell me directly. Everything I know came secondhand from someone I trust completely but it’s still secondhand.

If I tell him and it’s true, I may save him from building a marriage on a lie, but I’ll almost certainly destroy friendships and likely end the engagement. If I stay silent and he later finds out I knew, I’ll lose him anyway because he’ll believe I chose everyone else over him.

Some friends say I should stay out of it because relationships are complicated. Others say that if I care about him, I owe him the truth no matter how painful it is.

I honestly don’t know what the right answer is anymore. Every day I stay silent, I feel guilty. Every day I consider speaking up, I wonder if I’m about to ruin lives based on information that was never mine to share.

So I’m asking you.

Do I tell my best friend the truth, or stay silent and let the wedding go forward?

Am I Jealous for getting involved in something that isn’t my place, or Justified for believing he deserves the truth before he says “I do”?

What would you do in my position—speak up, or stay silent? And is this Jealous or Justified?
