Giving Them Their Flowers

The career paths we take are often shaped by pivotal moments, but every now and then, a single encounter completely changes the direction of a life. For me, that moment came in 2014, in a high rise conference room at Honigman in downtown Detroit.
I was the keynote speaker for a room full of attorneys. Detroit was going through a profound season of transformation, and during my presentation I drew a parallel to the mythical Phoenix. I talked about how Detroit, after being reduced to ashes, was preparing to rise stronger, greater, and more resilient than ever before.
Sitting in the audience that day was Charlie Langton.
When I finished speaking, Charlie came directly over to me. With the same enthusiasm and energy that everyone knows him for, he told me I had delivered an incredible presentation. Then he said something that would ultimately change my career. He told me he was going to get me on Fox 2’s Let It Rip.
To be honest, I did not think much of it. In my profession, people often make generous promises after a keynote address. They compliment your work, tell you they want to help, and then life gets busy. Most of those conversations never go any further.
Charlie Langton was different.
Less than two weeks later, I received a call from a producer at Fox 2.
That single phone call opened a door that transformed my life and expanded my platform in ways I never imagined. My first appearance on Let It Rip led to more than 30 appearances. Those opportunities eventually grew into my own evening segment, People 911 with Dr. Sabrina. From there came Mental Health Monday with Dr. Sabrina, a weekly morning segment that I have been honored to bring to Detroit viewers every Monday for nearly five years.
Behind every one of those broadcasts is the man who made the very first introduction possible.
Over the past decade, Charlie has been far more than a media colleague. He has been an encourager, a trusted source of wisdom, and a genuine partner in serving our community. When Charlie believes in someone, he does more than offer kind words. He creates opportunities. He opens doors. He gives people a platform and encourages them to step confidently into it.
When I spoke about the Phoenix rising from the ashes in 2014, I was talking about the city we all love. Looking back, I realize that speech was also about my own journey. Charlie Langton saw something in my message that afternoon. More importantly, he followed through on his promise. Because he matched his words with action, he helped me share that message with millions of people across our region.
For his belief in me, his mentorship, his friendship, and his unwavering support, I will always be grateful.
Charlie Langton deserves his flowers.
