FROM NBA EXECUTIVE TO COMMUNITY LEADER AND AUTHOR OF DEEP: MEET ROB MURPHY

ROB MURPHY is a NIL specialist, color sports analyst, leadership coach, basketball consultant, executive movie producer, and author of DEEP, The Life of Rob Murphy.

The former NBA executive held the positions of Assistant General Manager of the Detroit Pistons and President & General Manager of the Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G-League affiliate. Prior to ascending to the NBA to assist in restoring the Pistons franchise, Murphy was hired as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan men's basketball program on April 21, 2011.

In his first season, he guided the Eagles to their first-ever Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Title. Murphy was named 2012 MAC Coach of the Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches District 14 Coach of the Year. In his first eight seasons, he accumulated 144 victories with the Eagles while graduating 94% of his student-athletes. Murphy departed EMU as the 2nd winningest coach in the program’s history.

Over the past twenty-nine years, Murphy has had a positive impact on the lives of many through his coaching assignments as head men’s basketball coach at Eastern Michigan University, assistant coach at Syracuse University and Kent State University. He also coached state championship teams at Crockett & Central High Schools in Detroit while building one of the top AAU programs in the state of Michigan (Hurricanes).


Murphy is a Hall of Fame inductee at Central State University (2022) and Mumford High School (2024). The Rob Murphy Foundation, founded in 2014, has had a powerful impact by providing opportunities for youth and families in under-served areas throughout Michigan for more than a decade.
