On April 26th, the Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) hosted its highly anticipated 63rd Annual Barristers’ Ball—a glamorous evening honoring trailblazing attorneys, rising legal scholars, and the continued legacy of advocacy within Michigan’s legal community. Often likened to a prom for legal professionals, the Barristers’ Ball is much more: it’s a celebration of purpose, excellence, and unwavering commitment to justice.

The WBA, originally founded in the 1930s by a group of determined African American attorneys, was established with a powerful mission—to unify and channel their talents in order to increase the presence of Black lawyers throughout the state of Michigan. Over the decades, the WBA has grown into a leading force for social and political advocacy, mentorship, and legal reform. Its role in the legal community remains vital, continuing to shape the landscape of justice and equity in Michigan to this day.

With a proud legacy of supporting over 500 law students in securing employment opportunities and awarding more than $500,000 in scholarships, the WBA has had a lasting impact on Michigan’s legal pipeline and its broader communities. This year’s scholarship presentation, delivered by WBA President Robbie Gaines and Eric Mathis, was a heartfelt highlight of the evening—reminding attendees of the transformative power of education and opportunity.

The 2024 Barristers’ Ball was held at the newly restored and architecturally stunning Michigan Central Station, which opened to the public less than a year ago. The venue itself added to the magic of the night, as over 2,000 guests gathered under its grand ceilings, eager to celebrate and connect. From red carpet interviews hosted by "Keepin’ It Detroit" to electrifying performances by local entertainers, DJ BJ, one band global INC. Kern Brantley, DJ Snake and special celebrity guest Mannie Fresh, the event offered an unforgettable experience. The evening was a vibrant showcase of elegance and Detroit pride, with guests donning impeccable high-fashion attire and stepping out in their finest.
