Befitting of the times, Benjamin Moore’s color of the year has drama, and we love it. A polar opposite of last year’s beautiful, Simply White. Ellen O’Neill the creative director at Benjamin Moore said that this year’s hue was not immediately obvious. But once she choose it, validation was around every corner.

from Architectural Digest.

Ellen O’Neill : The moment we decided on Simply White as the 2016 Color of the Year, we knew that it would be a tough act to follow. This year, we didn’t have an epiphany like we had about white, but we all felt a little color deprived. Because everybody was still ruminating about it, I took about 500 pictures – everything from our travels to Paris, Korea, and Copenhagen to what people were wearing at the Met Gala, and assembled them on the wall in a room. Then at one o’clock, everybody came in. It was sort of like a parlor game. I said “O.K, look at this wall,” which was divided into color families. I said “just go tot he place that talks to you.” And everybody went over to that sort of aubergine family. Someone on the team said “that picture resonates with me because I see shadows in that flower petal.” Another team member said, “That’s funny, we have a color named Shadow,” and I went “that’s it!”

Shadow is described as rich, royal amethyst.

“The Color white is transcendent, powerful and polarizing – it is either taken for granted or obsessed over. White is not just a design trend, it is a design essential. The popularity of white, the mystique of white is quantifiable in our industry” – Ellen O’Neill on Benjamin Moore’s 2016 Color of the Year
