DETROIT, MI (December 9, 2023) – In the spirit of the season, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 11 am to 3 pm WDIV-TV Local 4 Anchor, Rhonda Walker along with the teens, board of directors, volunteers, and staff of the Rhonda Walker Foundation (RWF), will be spreading holiday cheer and heartfelt compassion to unhoused families living at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries – Genesis House II Shelter for the 21st straight year at the Boys and Girls Club Dauch Campus 16500 Tireman, Detroit, MI 48228.
Secret Santas, many close friends and colleagues of Rhonda Walker, will shop for the children in the shelter. Children will receive gifts from clothing and warm coats and boots to tablets, video games, cell phones, dolls, doll houses, and other toys. In addition, every woman and man will receive large gift baskets and gift bags of toiletries, health and self-care products, gloves, hats, scarves, and more donated by RWF and its generous Secret Santas.
The building will be decked out in holiday decorations and the families will be hosted by the RWF teens for some holiday cheer that includes photos with Santa, goodie bags, arts and crafts, fun games, a holiday meal, performances, and a huge bag of gifts filled with new toys, electronics, clothes, coats and more.
“In 2003, I hosted a fundraising event at Detroit Rescue Missions Ministries and one mother shared her painful journey into homelessness and how the Genesis House II Shelter saved her and her children and gave her the help, love, hope, prayers, and support she needed to get back on her feet. I wanted to make sure these children and their mothers going through the pain of homelessness still get to experience the joy of the season like other kids. So, I began collecting gifts donated by dozens of friends and family, and together with the youth and volunteers of the Rhonda Walker Foundation we host a big Christmas gala for the Genesis House II families every year.” expressed Rhonda Walker.
“This is one of the most rewarding days of the year for the Rhonda Walker Foundation. Teaching our teens the importance of giving back and being of service is a lesson we hope will become a lifetime habit as they grow into future leaders.” shared Ruselda Villanueva Johnson, RWF CEO.
