REVIEW - Akinyele The Blk. Night - SEX CHRONICLES 2

Sexuality vs. Sensuality.. Love vs. Lust . . There are many themes at work in the newest release by Singer/ Songwriter & Producer AKINYELE THE BLK. NIGHT, Sex Chronicles 2 ( Blk. Night Music LLC./ Groove - Ment Records). The album a 22 song opus , is the follow up to the original SEX CHRONICLES released in 2015. And picks up where that one left off and elevates the themes with the added caveat of the artist being 5 years matured into a more grown man mantra when it comes to such themes. Just because the album is called SEX CHRONICLES, doesn't mean its strictly a sex thing. There's Levels to this. And with Part 2, we gon get into those levels.

The album kicks off with a great pocket of grooves in "SC 2 Intro" , "Let's Do It Again" ," You don't Have Too".. The vibe is retro and very much Paul Lawrence/ Kashif inspired with the Grooves.. The flow, and the Beat make for not just a Thumping Bottom.. but allow for Akinyele to freely ride rhythmically with his Vocal. The lead single "Rollin" feat. Rapper Chris Lanard, forms a Middle Eastern soundscape combined with Stutter drums and Snake Charmed horns much like a Loose Ends flavored cut, that make it an enticing track made for those that like De Dutty Wine.. The Album has an array of guests that feature prominently and add a layer of originality as well as offer a change in pace. An album of 22 songs can fall into an overkill monotonous rut, especially with one vocal and vibe continuously throughout. “SC2”, actually benefits from the cast approach on various cuts like “Toxic” feat. Martel on vocals as well as Akinyele : and “Where Would We Be” feat.

Vocalist Carmen Mi’Chelle that offers a Soulful swing with both vocalists going back and forth in a rhythmic banter. Good Vibe on this one.

But make no mistake. With or without collaborators, AKINYELE THE BLK NIGHT, holds down a song well on his own. Many of the songs offer his own views from his “Grown Man” pulpit. “G.D.G” where he sings on the back and forth, of a relationship based on Sex. Offering a hook that asks “Why the Hell we Break up.. When the Sex so G-- Damn Good, Why the Hell we make up, When both know we ain’t No Good”. Songs such as “Memories”,"All On Me" , “Jade” and “Better”, all are collabs with Producer Ghanz and gives Akinyele the Backbone to his brand of Mature Themed Soul. Also display his penchant for traditional R&B/ Soul themes and firmly ride the Urban AC Lane. Lyrically, Arrangements, Performance and production of these types of songs put him among the likes of Joe, Carl Thomas and KEM for being a Solid Soul artist that makes Solid Soul Music. Reminiscent of the Mike City Soul era when songs like Carl Thomas’ “I Wish” and Dave Hollister “One Man Woman”, ruled the airwaves. Akinyele’s “SC2”, is a bridge to that era, in between, and now.

And of course an album called Sex Chronicles 2, is gonna turm up the heat for a little to live up to it's title. And Akinyele doesn’t disappoint with songs like “Lay Down” where he sets the scene immediately. Stating what he sees, “ Your Fresh out the Shower, Nothin but a Towel on”.. and wants. “Baby Come and Lay wit me..” Is a dramatically Sexy Joint, as well as “Like A Symphony” , that builds along with Akinyele’s beautifully arranged vocals. Giving you a simulation of the building anticipation, by way of layered orchestrations.. ( Pimpin, pimpin, Pimpin!!). He keeps the seduction sensual into “The Blk. Cave” takes us into D’Angelo/ Raheem DeVaughn territory with his vocally visual and direct, but sensually suggestive Lyrics.. The Pace of these songs keeps the fire at boil with the album going into Grind mode to deliver Climactic
Crescendos..in cuts like “Your Body”, “SEX”, “I Just Wanna” & a few more mood setters are perfect Quiet Storm type, Grinders.

The album itself as a whole, delivers. It's an R&B Soul music lover's textbook album that swings, sways, flys and glides in all of the right and necessary places. It's very much a Mature album in not just subject matter, but in sonics. It's put together well and shows full respect to its audience. The material is not dumbed down nor condescending, nor vulgar in presentation. It's tastefully done. Written and produced by the artist himself, a skilled songwriter and producer in his own
right, with various tracks also produced by Ghanz and Mr. Royal to give him different flavors and lanes to take the listener down throughout. It's well worth a listen/ stream and definitely should be on your playlist whether you are setting the scene for Love or Lust… Sex Chronicles 2, is a must. SEX CHRONICLES 2 BY AKINYELE THE BLK. NIGHT STREAMING NOW..
