It’s truly amazing just how much talent is here in Detroit. Whether it’s music, visual art or fashion, Detroit is well positioned to make major contributions to the culture for many years to come.

Quandell Halston Wright is the creative mind behind the William Palmer Collection, a Detroit Based fashion house. His designs are fresh, innovative and he’s exactly the new energy the fashion industry needs. I had a chance to chat with him recently and the following is a part of our conversation

ME: What's inspired you to start making clothing and what age did you start taking it seriously?

WP: I fell in love with fashion when I was 8 years old, I started off sketching sneakers and clothes that I'd love to see myself in & possibly create one day. My Mother has always been a true inspiration to me, she was the first person to tell me that I can be whatever I want to be in life. When I turned 13, I taught myself how to hand sew, that's when I really started to take it seriously.

ME: What age did you sell your first piece?

WP: I was 13 years old when I did my first custom piece for a friend of mine and sold it to him for dirt cheap lol but, the fact that some wanted to wear what I created was more exciting.

ME: Tell us some of designers that inspire you.

WP: Some of the designers that have inspired me are Ralph Lauren, Karl Kani, Pyer Moss, Daymond John ( Fubu ), and Roy Halston Frowick, American fashion Icon from the 1970s that introduced a whole different look to women's fashion plus, we have the same middle name so, I think that's dope that I'm named after a designer lol

ME: You have started to get a lot of attention lately with your new purse line what is the inspiration behind them?

WP: Yes, the William Palmer "AMORE" handbags have been a hit. I'm beyond thankful for all the support & love I've received lately. So, after I launched my first women's collection named "AMORE" this past summer I knew I needed to bring more to the table. For the last couple years my father, my mother, and wife had been telling me to get into handbags, but I felt like it wasn't the right time and I wanted to be completely different from everyone else as much as possible. When the bag was introduced to me after I declined so many other designs, I instantly fell in love with it. My manufacturer said I shouldn't do it because no one would like it now, It's one of the top bags that people want to get their hands on. After all the inspiration behind this bag is being different, it's okay to step outside the box, and it's okay to always be creative.

ME: You recently did a collaboration with the Detroit Pistons tell us about that.

WP: The collaboration with the Detroit Pistons with our merch hasn't started yet but they love the sketches and concept. We'll be starting on the project really soon and just know that this collaboration is going to be out of this world. But, for most part working alongside the Detroit Pistons has been amazing, it's a good feeling to have great people and the organization itself be so in tune with the community and more.

ME: What does the future look like in your eyes for William Palmer Homme?

WP: William Palmer Homme will be one of the main fashion houses here in Detroit, the most influential brand in the nation, and a major brand that'll always stay connected to its community. William Palmer Homme is the New, the Now, and the Forever.

ME: Do you have a favorite piece that have designed?

WP: My favorite piece that I designed was a piece I created for Kanye West.

ME: Where do make most of the William Palmer Homme collection at?

WP: I create most William Palmer pieces in my garage which I renovated and made into my design studio.
