On March 1, 2023, the Detroit Pistons hosted their annual "Girls Dream Big Summit" at The Henry Ford Pistons
Performance Center, as a part of Women's History Month. This event was geared towards middle and high school girls from all over the metropolitan city.
The program started with some inspiring women leaders of the Detroit community from all different backgrounds, moderated by Ingrid Kelley from Fox 2 News. The panelists included Mama Soul (Musical Artist), Angela Tompkins (Consumers Energy Company), Stacy Lovelace (Assistant General Manager of Motor City Cruise), Joyce Chan Russel (Priority Health), and Bridget Spunky (Ally Financial). These women were able to share their backgrounds, experiences, and the effects of being a woman in their field. The youth was able to connect and engage with the panelists in some Q&A.
Shortly after, the girls were divided into three rotating sessions. The Ally Financial Literacy session exposed the young ladies to the importance of credit and how to budget money by playing financial games. Next was the Pistons Academy Basketball Clinic, where they worked as a team to accomplish one goal. Lastly, there was the speed mentoring, where I and other mentors were able to sit down and talk with the young ladies about their concerns in the world of being a girl. This was most important because we got a chance to listen to their feelings and connect with them.
Off to the Pistons game and time to have some more fun! The girls were most excited about the game and being on the big screen. We laughed, expressed ourselves, but most of all, we connected. At the end, the girls were presented with a Detroit Pistons tote with some Pistons goodies in it.
Girls Dream Big is about girls expressing and believing in their dreams, even when they are told that it's not possible. Think big, dream big, and give it your all.
Thanks to the Detroit Pistons, Aaron Jonson, Taylor Smith, and the panelists for a wonderful event.
