Dave Woods- Humanitarian of the Year

By Antisia King

Every now and then you meet someone who is exactly who you thought they were. Dave Woods is that guy for me. For about two years now I’ve followed him on social media, at first I was drawn to his “Enjoy Detroit T-shirt line but I quickly saw there's more to Dave Woods then a dope t-shirt.

Dave is kind and thoughtful; he has taken it upon himself to help others become the best that they can be, he’s a staunch advocate for our homeless community and those in need of mental health care.

He’s also a successful entrepreneur; he operates SBoy Printing which specializes in custom printing, digital media, graphics, and brand development.

He started his first business when he was 14 years old. He recalls as a fifth grader being at a school program where the speaker asked the kids "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Most of the kids were saying the normal garden variety stuff like Fireman, Police, Doctor or Lawyer but not Dave, his answer was "I want to own a business."

From that day forth he took on the roles of an entrepreneur, he cut grass, cleaned houses and was even a babysitter.
Ultimately he started a mobile candy store and from that point on, he knew he would always be his own boss.

Life was not always easy for Dave. Due to an unfair prison sentence affecting his father, Dave was raised mostly in a single parent environment which had its challenges but he credits his strong Mother for getting them through it all. Enduring life challenges that would have crippled many of us, he has turned his pain into power.

He also runs Enjoy Detroit a nonprofit organization which he started in 2013. Enjoy Detroit’s mission is to revitalize impoverished communities within the City of Detroit, provide goods to Men, Women and Children in need, and motivate, empower and encourage young adults through positive mentoring relationships.

Since 2013 he has served thousands of meals and mentored hundreds of youths and provided a ton of life sustaining goods to those in need.

Dave is always in help mode, there never seems to be a time when he’s not lending a helping hand. He is the big brother, a friend, man of God and the voice of those often ignored.

I recently asked him, where does your motivation come from? He answered “when I was young I searched for guidance and love and people ignored me because of the way I looked, so I decided long ago I would offer the world the love I never got.’’

He also has prayer meetings for men at the SBOY Printing shop. “I believe that a strong community starts with men so we get together and pray for protection and wisdom.”

Dave is a Detroit treasure we should all wrap our arms around. Our city is better because Dave Woods. I urge you to get to know him, he’s a wonderful person and his energy is infectious, you’ll feel it right away.

Dave was our unanimous choice for Humanitarian Of The Year and we couldn’t be happier about that. We love Dave Woods and we are so proud of him. We urge you get to him and let’s all help him continue his mission.

Congratulations Mr. Woods.
