One in a Million. Born in Brooklyn, New York, but ultimately growing up in the city of Detroit, Aaliyah-the late songstress, whose name translates to “The exalted one”, released her third and final studio album on this date in 2001.

This album fuses influences of hip-hop, neo-soul, R&B, and rock with Haughton’s angelic vocals. The majority of the writing credits are given to the late Static Major, a respected songwriter in the music industry, and a good friend of Aaliyah. Many of the songs touch on different stages of relationships. From the opening Timbaland produced track, “We need a Resolution”, the timeless “Rock The Boat”, and the empowerment against domestic violence on tracks like “I Refuse” and “Never No More”, Aaliyah was BabyGirl’s best work. The project can be enjoyed without any skips, and truly captured the essence of the early 2000s. Produced by the legendary Key Beats, the smooth vibe of “Its Whatever” is my favorite song of the album.

The album was critically acclaimed upon its release and peaked on the Billboard 200. In late August of 2001, Aaliyah traveled between Miami and the Bahamas to film a music video for “Rock the Boat”, but died in a plane crash returning to the United States. After we loss her, albums sales skyrocketed to number one on the charts, and has since then been certified multi-platinum. Impacting artists such as Drake, FKA Twigs, Rihanna and more, the project has been deemed as one of the best R&B albums of its time.

To this date, even amongst the era of digital music, Blackground Records has not made this masterpiece officially available on any on any streaming services. The project can be legitimately purchased in physical copies here, or streamed via youtube below!

We love you babygirl, now and forever!
